What’s in Store for Misty Meadows Farm?

What’s in Store for Misty Meadows Farm?

It’s been just over a year since David Lukens purchased Misty Meadows farm from Melissa and Mark Moeller. In the past year, we’ve maintained the highest standard of animal care while navigating the waters of a management change. Now, we are excited to watch the farm expand and improve.

A Legacy Preserved

The Moellers searched for well over a year to find the perfect person to continue the Misty Meadows’ legacy and were unable. The couple made the decision to shut down the farm rather than risk a decline in standards and began to ramp down production.

That’s when they spoke to David about adopting beloved farm dogs Cooper and Icarus. David was unwilling to watch a family-owned farm in his community shut their doors, and he made the decision to buy and revitalize Misty Meadows farm.

Egg Production on the Rise

In the past year, we have raised four flocks of chickens and are now operating at nearly full capacity. When David bought the farm, we were producing around 400-500 eggs a day. Now, with the support of David, Scott, the Grace Harbor Farms and the dedication of our amazing team of farmers, we are producing over 1,000. Come June, we are expecting another increase in production as our youngest flock starts laying.

Expanding Our Impact: Compost for the Community

Beyond expanding our production, we are working hard to improve the systems at Misty Meadows farm for ourselves and for our community. We naturally produce tons of organic compost every year, and this year we are taking the steps to share this resource.

Thanks to a grant from the Washington State Organic and Sustainable Farming Fund, we will be able to acquire the supplies needed to bag and sell our compost. With this project, we are hoping to provide quality, organic compost to local gardeners, hobby farmers, and homesteaders.

Making Eggs More Accessible

Also this year, we are taking steps to make our eggs more accessible. Over the winter and so far this spring, we have been selling our family grade and jumbo eggs to community members at a reduced price. Coming this summer, we will be establishing a farm stand on-site.

At this stand, you’ll be able to find the same Misty Meadows’ eggs that you’d find on the shelf of your local grocery store alongside our inexpensive family grade and jumbo eggs. Family grade eggs have pigment discolorations, stains, and bumps, while jumbo eggs are far too big to fit in our commercial cartons.

Looking Ahead

Coming 2024-2025, you might see a new Misty Meadows farm product on the shelves: duck eggs! Our farm sits on top of federally protected wetlands, and we’ve decided to work with this beautiful piece of land we are on, rather than against it.

The conditions of our marshy, presently unused field are perfect for raising happy and healthy ducks. We are currently in the beginning stages of planning our duck egg operation. Stick around until next year to taste Misty Meadows farm organic duck eggs for yourself.
