Our Story: From Three Chickens to a Full Pasture

Our Story: From Three Chickens to a Full Pasture

Misty Meadows farm began with three hens and a goal to eat better food. In 2005, Melissa and Mark Moeller started raising chickens in their backyard in Everson, Washington. They didn’t have a long-term plan. They just wanted eggs that tasted right. Fresh. Bright. Simple. The kind of organic eggs you can’t find in big stores.

Their chickens lived on grass, scratched through the dirt, and enjoyed fresh air every day. The first organic eggs they collected had thick shells and deep orange yolks. After one meal, Melissa and Mark saw a clear difference. So did their neighbors. That difference turned into demand.

They added more hens. Soon, what began as a small project turned into a growing local egg source. Over the next several years, their backyard flock expanded to 2,000 birds. Misty Meadows farm had become a local name, known for clean, healthy chicken eggs and high standards.

But while the farm grew, the mission stayed the same: raise healthy chickens, protect the land, and never compromise the quality of their organic free range eggs.

Building a Farm with Purpose

Melissa and Mark didn’t copy large-scale farming models. They focused on what worked for the animals and the land. They allowed the chickens to roam. They rotated pastures. They avoided chemicals. They made each decision based on what would protect the health of the flock, the soil, and their customers.

They didn’t cut corners. They didn’t speed up the process. They simply followed a method that respected nature.

The farm became known for consistency. People could taste the difference. Local families trusted the name Misty Meadows. Chefs and bakers began asking for their eggs. Stores started stocking them.

For 17 years, Melissa and Mark stayed close to every part of the farm. They raised the birds, collected the chicken eggs, and packed each carton with care. But by 2022, they felt it was time to pass the torch.

Finding the Right Hands

Melissa and Mark didn’t want to hand Misty Meadows farm off to just anyone. They had built something personal and meaningful. They wanted the farm to stay in the community. They hoped someone with shared values would step forward.

That person showed up and brought someone else who felt the same.

David Lukens came to the farm in 2022. At first, he just wanted to help rehome the two farm dogs, Cooper and Icarus. But while talking to Melissa and Mark, he learned they were looking for someone to carry on the farm.

He didn’t plan to take it on. But the more he saw, the more it made sense. He already ran Grace Harbor Farms, a family farm in Whatcom County, known for its goat milk skincare and small-batch, clean-label dairy. Like Misty Meadows, Grace Harbor focused on real food and doing things right.

David didn’t work alone. His longtime friend and business partner Scott Boley shared that same hands-on approach. Scott grew up around farms and understood the daily rhythm of agriculture. He believed good farming starts with good stewardship of animals, land, and people. He didn’t see farms as businesses to flip or automate. He saw them as commitments.

When David told Scott about Misty Meadows farm, Scott didn’t hesitate. He saw the value. Not just in the land or the chickens, but in what the Moellers had built, something honest, cared for, and worth preserving. He didn’t want to change it. He wanted to keep it real.

Scott brought structure, consistency, and decades of farm experience. He understood pasture rotation, animal health, and how to keep operations smooth without cutting corners. He became a key part of daily planning, supply coordination, and farm care. He also helped make sure the values stayed tight across both Misty Meadows and Grace Harbor.

Together, David and Scott stepped in, not as new owners, but as caretakers of something already great.

They didn’t come with big promises. They came with sleeves rolled up.

A Sister Farm to Grace Harbor Farm

Today, Misty Meadows, now Misty Meadows  Organics, continues under the care of David, Scott, and the Grace Harbor team.

The same location. The same pasture-raised chickens. The same values.

David and Scott understand what makes Misty Meadows Organics special. They have no plans to turn it into a large operation.

They believe in local, slow, honest food. Their goal is to protect the land, keep the chickens healthy, and offer organic free range eggs that meet the highest standards.

Their farms now work side by side. Grace Harbor provides clean dairy. Misty Meadows provides pasture raised eggs and other organic products. Both support small-scale farming with deep roots in the community.

Our Commitment to Organic Farming

Misty Meadows Organics follows certified organic practices. More than just a label, it’s a promise to keep things simple, clean, and safe.

We use organic feed that contains no GMOs, synthetic pesticides, or artificial additives. The chickens roam on certified organic pasture with access to fresh grass, soil, and insects. No part of the farm relies on chemicals or shortcuts.

Organic farming protects more than the animals in the farm. It supports the health of the soil, keeps nearby water clean, and creates a safe environment for pollinators and wildlife.

Every step we take, from feed to egg collection, meets strict organic standards. We track our supply chain, check our records, and go through regular inspections.

But more than the paperwork, we follow organic practices because we believe in them. They work. They produce real results. Healthier birds. Better eggs. Better land.

We believe organic farming isn’t a trend. It’s a return to common sense.

Why Pasture-Raised Eggs Matter

Our chickens live on pasture. Not sometimes. Not part-time. Every day.

They walk across open fields. They eat grass and insects. They spread out and act like chickens. This makes them stronger and calmer. It also builds better organic free range eggs.

Most eggs sold in stores come from birds kept indoors. Even labels like “cage-free” or “free-range” often mean little. Those birds still spend most of their lives inside, in crowded barns.

That’s not what we do.

Our birds stay outside, rotate across different parts of the pasture, and get plenty of space. They return to mobile coops at night for safety, then head back out in the morning.

This lifestyle builds better immunity, cleaner eggs, and less stress. And it keeps the land healthy too.

Pasture-based systems also allow natural fertilization. The chickens feed the soil. The soil grows stronger grass. The grass feeds the chickens. It’s a full-circle method that works without machines or chemicals.

What Makes Our Eggs Different?

Farm fresh eggs from Misty Meadows Organics look, feel, and taste different. The yolks are deep yellow—sometimes almost orange. The whites hold their shape. The shells don’t crack easily.

These are signs of strong, well-fed chickens. The eggs hold more nutrition. Studies show that pasture-raised organic eggs contain more vitamin A, vitamin E, and omega-3 fatty acids compared to conventional chicken eggs.

We don’t bleach or wash our eggs with strong chemicals. We keep them clean naturally. We hand-pack each carton and deliver fresh eggs directly to local stores and homes.

You’ll notice the difference right away. These eggs cook better. They hold together in pans. They add richer flavor to baked goods. And they give your meals more color, texture, and depth.

Local Roots, Growing Reach

Misty Meadows farm started small and local, and we stay close to that. We serve families across Western Washington, from Whatcom County to Pierce County, and now we’re expanding.

More people across the U.S. want eggs they can trust. Eggs with clear sources, honest labels, and real values. We’re building that. Slowly and carefully. Not to grow fast, but to grow right.

We partner with small markets, co-ops, bakeries, and restaurants that care about food quality. We work with buyers who value organic products and real relationships.

We don’t outsource. We don’t mass-produce. We don’t compromise. As we expand, we keep the same pasture-raised system, the same organic practices, and the same care in every carton.

More Coming — Our Ducks and Organic Farm Products

The farm started with chickens, but the vision kept growing. After settling into their new role, David and Scott took a close look at what customers loved and where they wanted more. One thing stood out right away…duck eggs.

People wanted them for baking, allergies, and that rich, creamy texture. So the team introduced a small flock of pasture-raised ducks. Like the chickens, these ducks live outside, with space to roam, clean water to splash in, and organic feed that keeps them strong. They lay fewer eggs than chickens, but the eggs are larger, thicker-shelled, and packed with nutrition.

Many chefs and home bakers now ask for Misty Meadows farmduck eggs specifically. They hold more protein, more fat, and more flavor…perfect for custards, cakes, and high-protein breakfasts.

But the expansion didn’t stop with ducks. Over time, Misty Meadows farm began adding more organic farm products. All of them follow the same standards: clean, local where possible, and true to the soil.

  • Raw honey, harvested locally, unfiltered and full of natural enzymes.
  • Organic coffee, small-batch roasted and smooth in flavor.
  • Real maple syrup, tapped and bottled with nothing added.
  • Hardneck garlic, grown in rich soil with deep flavor and strong cloves.

Each of these products supports local farmers, small producers, and ethical sourcing. They also help Misty Meadows Organics customers buy more of what they need from one trusted place.

The farm didn’t set out to become a full shop. But by offering quality products that match its values, Misty Meadows Organics grew into something more complete, not just a place to get organic fresh farm eggs, but a place to find food that feels good to eat.

Misty Meadows is Still a Family Farm

Misty Meadows farm doesn’t run like a corporation. It runs like a farm. With boots on the ground, early mornings, and real work.

We collect organic eggs by hand. We walk the pasture. We talk to customers. We answer every email. We know the names of our chickens. And we know the names of the people we sell to.

This is what small farming looks like. Honest. Steady. Focused.

We care about the work because we care about the people who eat our chicken eggs and duck eggs. And we stay close to the process so we can stay accountable.

That’s what family farming means. It’s personal.

What Comes Next for Misty Meadows Organics

Misty Meadows Organics will continue to grow, but we’ll never lose sight of what matters. We’ll keep raising chickens and ducks on pasture. We’ll keep farming organically. We’ll keep delivering organic eggs you can count on.

Because food should be simple. Farming should be honest. And eggs should taste like eggs. That’s what we do here, every single day.
